Alex Pinguli Painting

projects.

Welcome! I'm Alex Pinguli, an artist inspired by the beauty of the outdoors and the ever-changing nature of water.  My body of work, As Above, So Below, is a visual exploration of the natural world.  Water serves both as a subject and a metaphor in my work, acting as a threshold between two distinct reams.  It is a dividing line, yet also a bridge, blurring the boundary between what is seen and what is hidden.

An Introduction

Born and raised in Tirana, Albania, I have been drawn to painting ever since I can remember.  For me it was always a way to see and understand my world.  Moving multiple times through my adolescent years to Greece then to the US brought about much change and uncertainty in my life.  Through it all painting remained the discipline and medium that followed me through the various cultures that I experienced and always remained the one thing that brought about continuity.

I have a BFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art with a Teaching Certificate and a Masters of Education in Secondary Ed from West Chester University.  I have been teaching Art for the past 22 years in various capacities, most of which have been in a high school setting where I currently still practice.  I love to teach art but most recently I've been diving back into painting and growing in my craft.  My choice of medium is Oil paint and I love exploring unique brushwork and application through the use of a palette knife on a hard substrate, like an artist’s panel.  While I mostly focus on landscape painting and scenery from my own travels I don't think of my work as realistic.  Rather, I focus much more on the exploration of light, texture, shape, and color harmonies inviting the viewer to engage and interact with the surface of the painting in a fresh new way.  The process of painting and building to an impasto through layering is very much what interests me as does the interplay of what lies beneath the surface and how it impacts and interacts with the top coat.  Water remains a constant subject in my body of work and appears frequently.  I am drawn to it not only because of its reflective qualities but also because it divides and shapes two distinct worlds, that which is above and the world that resides below the surface.
